Puja Sarup is the co-founder of Patchworks Ensemble, a theatre artist and a director of theatrical works. When she was in grade 5, she wanted to work in the World Bank, and to accomplish her dreams she went to the St. Xavier’s College. She was not so engrossed into acting then, she just performed a few plays at her school. During the college, she could not gather enough courage to audition for the plays but during her final year, she thought, “Now or never” so she went, auditioned, and got through in Atul Kumar’s play, “Noises Off.” She was not sure of her decision to act in the play but when she did the play she was filled with a new zest and love for drama.

She did not want to go to the National School of Drama in Delhi and at that time Mumbai did not have a Drama School. Mumbai University had just announced the MA Programme in Theatre Arts; she was a candidate for the first batch of the course, during 2003-05. After completing her course she joined Footsbarn, a leading traveling theatre company in 2005. She travelled with them for a month and a half while they toured in France. She kicked off her silver screen career in 2010 with the movie “The Girl in Yellow Boots” and then she performed in Sui Dhaga in 2018. She acted in plays like, “Hamlet- The Crown Prince” (for which she won the META Award), “All About My Mother,” and many more. Her hobbies mainly include watching Netflix, traveling, and predominantly she likes taking theatre to non-theatre people through workshops. She is a strong believer of the fact that everyone has a story to tell, they just have to find their style and the story they want to tell.

In 2011, she went to Florence, Italy for a 3-year theatre course at the Helios School, which was funded under the J. N. Tata Scholarship. After coming, she did not want to act so she decided to become a creator. It was then she met her co-director Sheena Khalid Sheena Khalid is a young theatre director, writer, >> Read More... and they worked on “Ila” together, which was the debut for both the directors, as well as for Patchworks Ensemble. They were the creators of the critically acclaimed drag show “Gentlemen’s Club aka Tape.” This famous theatrical duo was also the creator of “Fly by Night.” Puja was awarded the Vinod Doshi Fellowship in 2010. She is also associated with French companies like Buchinger’s Boots. Her meaning of a successful play is that the play should arouse curiosity among the audience and the people related to the play. Before the play, they have a ritual that they gather around forming a circle praying and thanking the persons who have helped them to reach there. Puja’s collaboration with the German director Felix Ott and Sandbox Collective for Ramayana is one of her most successful plays to date. Her soulful writing and acting captivate each soul with awe.
