Vijaya was born and brought up in Kolkata, West Bengal. She then relocated to Madras, now Chennai, with her mother, Saradambal when she was fifteen years old. She was interested in Indian classical music and learned it professionally when she was just five.Â
M.R. Vijaya became the only person to win the Presidential Award held by West Bengal’s All India Radio’s classical music competition. She debuted as a playback singer in the 1970 film Thirumalai Thenkumari and sang alongside the legendary singer Sirkazhi Govindarajan. Over the years, she sang songs not only for Tamil films but also for other language films like Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Bengali, and many more.Â
Her devotional songs are still popular even today.Â
M.R. Vijaya mostly sings devotional songs and sang timeless songs like Thalaiva Thavapputhalva, Varuval Annai, Madurai Arasalum, and many more. She sang not only in films but also for original devotional albums as well. Her songs are available in leading music apps like Apple, Gaana, JioSaavn, etc., and are in the devotional genre.
On the personal front, she married Balakrishnan, who is also a classical singer and has sung numerous classical and devotional songs with her husband. She has two children, Rajani and Sharada, and her daughter Sharada, also known as Bombay Sharada, has followed in her mother’s footsteps to become a classical and playback singer.Â
