Dilshad Khan born on 7 August 1941 in Kolkata is a legendary Indian classical singer and composer. He was born into a Hindu family and is the younger brother of prominent personality Buddhadev Das Gupta, the sarod maestro. His father was Arabinda Dasgupta, who was a district magistrate. He studied at Xavier’s Collegiate School in Kolkata. He was classmates with R. D. Burman who is also a famous music composer and director. His musical journey started at a very young age. He learned Tabla when he was four and then took singing lessons under N. C. Chakravorty, Gyan Prakash Ghosh, and Hidan Banarjee.
He was a marine engineer by profession but left his job to pursue music. He then moved to Mumbai permanently and became a disciple of vocalist Padmashree Faiyaz Ahmed Khan of Agra Gharana. He is married to Assamese classical singer Begum Parveen Sultana and has a daughter. The couple has recorded and released many albums, including One Plus One, Marvelous Jugalbandi, Harmony, Ethereal Duo, From Dawn Until Night, Two Voices, Khayal Se Bhajan Tak and many more.
