A pioneer of the Kirana Gharana and professional musician, Ustad Shakoor Khan was born in 1905 to a long lineage of classical musicians. He is an exceptional player of the classical instrument Sarangi. Shakoor was introduced to this genre of music at a young age by his father, Abdul Zafar Khan, an outstanding Sarangi player who trained and taught the young Shakoor all that he needed to know. Ustad Mehboob Baksh, the maternal grandfather of Shakoor, also had a great influence on his growth as a musician.
As he grew, Shakoor took further lessons from his uncle, Abdul Wahid Khan, the founder of Kirana Gharana. Shakoor was one of the first among the Sarangiyas to be honoured with the Padma Shri Award, which is one of the country’s highest civilian awards given by the Government of India. Ustad Shakoor Khan died in 1975. His legacy is survived by his two sons, Mashkoor Ali Khan and Mubarak Ali Khan, both of whom are well-known classical vocalists.
