Shyama was born on 7th June 1935 in Lahore in British India (now in present-day Pakistan). At birth, she was given a different name by her parents. Later, she adopted the stage name, Shyama. She left her school after the fifth standard, as she wanted to focus on her acting career.
Other than Shyama, she is also known by the names Shama, Shama Dulari, and Shyama Zutshi. She is the wife of Fali Mistry, who was a famous director of photography and cinematographer in the Indian Film Industry. The couple got hitched in the year 1953.

That is why she is an exceptional Kathak dancer. She has starred in almost two hundred movies in her 70-year old career. Shyama debuted in Bollywood films with the movie Zeenat in the year 1945. This was a melodramatic movie, which was directed by Hussain Rizvi. She played a supporting role. Her character’s name was Khurshid (Baby). Shyama’s father didn’t support her career choice.
They had a major tiff when he got to know about her movie Zeenat. Her second movie was the 1949 romantic drama named Shair. In this film, she again played a supporting role of Shama Dulari. Shyama’s fifth movie Patanga by H. S. Rawali in 1949 was set in the backdrop of the World War 2. At the beginning of her career in movies, she was mostly seen playing supporting role characters. The actor’s first major movie as a lead actor was Nishana in the year 1950. She was cast with Madhubala and Ashok Kumar.
In 1951, she did the movie Tarana again with Actor Madhubala. The film is about a foreign-returned doctor who gets stranded in a village and falls in love with a village girl. Shyama played the role of Sheela in the movie. She was the recipient of the Filmfare Award 1958 under the category Best Supporting Actress for the movie Sharada.
Shyama is also best-known for her performances in various songs. Her most memorable dance performance is in the movie Bhabhi’s song Chali Chali Re Patang. She also did a song called Ja Ja Ja Ja Bewafa in the film Aar Paar, which released in 1954.
