Sardar Akhtar was an Indian Cinema actress who worked in Hindi and Urdu films. She started her acting career by working as an artist on the Urdu stage. In her early films with Saroj Moviestone, she did a lot of action roles. She became popular with her role as the washer-woman in Sohrab Modi’s Pukar. A popular song she sang in the film was Kaheko Mohe Chhede.
Her career-defining role was a peasant woman deserted by her husband, in
Mehboob Khan’s Aurat (1940), a role that later made famous by Narghis in Mehboob’s remake Mother India. She was married to Mehboob Khan.She acted in more than 50 movies in her career span of 1933-45. She married Mehboob Khan in 1942, whom she had met when he cast her in Ali Baba (1940). She stopped acting after completing movies like Fashion (1943) and Rahat.
