Navnindra Behl was born in Delhi on 30th October 1949. Born a performer, she started acting on stage at the mere age of three, foreshadowing her later days as an actor, director, and writer, making her a formidable presence in theatre. She completed her post graduation in Punjabi Literature and then went on to join the Department of Drama at Punjabi University, Patiala, as a lecturer. In a splendid career spanning almost four decades, she has written and directed several acclaimed theatre productions. She has also trained and groomed several film and theatre actors. She has also acted as the Director of the Audio Visual Research Centre and has lectured and taught acting at several renowned institutions as a visiting lecturer.
She has written and directed various films, documentaries, and television serials in her 37-year career. She has also worked as a scriptwriter for television shows aired on Doordarshan. Apart from these, she was a member of the UPSC selection panel for theatre and media at the Rabindra Bharati University. She has also authored and published ten books and done extensive research in the arena of film, theatre, and performance. A renowned personality in the field of theatre, Navnindra Behl is a very respected performer and director in India. Aside from these achievements, she has won several awards. She won an award as producer and director of the film Chirion ka Chamba in the Indo-Soviet Russian Film Festival.
She has also won the award for the best writer by the Sahitya Kala Parishad, and the Rashtriya Ratan Award for her contribution to film and television from the International Friendship Forum. Her film Maachis was awarded by the Human Rights Organisation for contribution to cinema. For her immense contribution to theatre, film, television, and media, she has been recognized as one of the foremost authorities in the field.
