Sandhya Kumar is a director by profession who has made unconventional documentaries and films since 2007. She has studied Films and Communication at Jamia Millia University and San Francisco Art Institute. Sandhya is a mother of two children. Sandhya’s films are delivered to audiences of different countries by showing them at various film festivals. The Pacific Film Archive, SF MOMA, Kathmandu and International Documentary, South Asian Film Festival, Mumbai Film Festival, and Short Film Festival of Kerala screen her films.
Public Service Broadcasting Trust (PSBT) and the Indian Foundation for the Arts (IFA) have given her grants, and Sandhya is also an ATSA fellow at South Asia’s ARThink. Sandhya Kumar’s movies include O Friend, This Waiting!, Memory of a Light, Hockey In My Blood, Koothu, and Light Falling On White Flowers. Among these, O Friend, This Waiting!, which focuses on South India’s Devadasi tradition, has won a National Award for Best Arts/Cultural Film. Sandhya has worked with Aman Kanwar as an assistant director on The Lightning Testimonies. She has a studio named Coloured Glass Films, situated in Bangalore. It mainly short films and documentaries for a variety of audiences.
