Nathalia Syam

Nathalia Syam is a Film Director by profession. She was born on 14 July 1992 in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India. Her nationality is Indian, along with British Citizenship. She grew up with her elder sister and parents. Her father, Syamlal Thankappan is a professor in the United Kingdom, and her mother, Jayasree Syamlal, is an author. Her sister, Neetha Syam, is a scriptwriter. Actor Mukesh is her maternal uncle. Nathalia is the granddaughter of O. Madhavan, a notable Indian theatre director, actor, and politician, and Vijay Kumari, an Indian stage, television, and film actress.

Nathalia moved to the United Kingdom when she was 12 years old. She lived with her parents and sister and continued her schooling there. She later studied the subject of Films, Theatre, and Television at the University of Reading. Nathalia started her career in 2016. After completing her Film Studies, Nathalia worked between the British and Indian Film Industries. Her last short film, Lehenga, was nominated for the Best of British 2018 at the BAFTA Qualifying for Iris Prize.

Nathalia specifically portrays themes that carry different cultures and social situations to engage the audience. She also debuted in The Footprints on Water, a British-Indian movie written by her sister, Neetha Syam, and produced by Mohann Nadaar, The Production headquarters in the United Kingdom. She also directed numerous other films such as Thaara (short film), Sugu (short film), etc. Nathalia attended the film’s World Premiere at the New York Indian Film Festival (NYIFF) on 12 May, and its United Kingdom Premiere at the United Kingdom Film Festival on 13 May 2021. She even worked predominantly in the Malayalam movie industry.

Nathalia has also worked as a Director at Omart Creations, London, United Kingdom, since 2012. Between the British and Indian film Industries, she has worked in various capacities as an associate director and 1st Associate director and has broadcast credits for her previous commercials. Nathalia also leads the BFI Film Academy for Resource Productions held at Pinewood Studios and has curated and delivered various filmmaking masterclasses, both online and in person. She launched a filmmaking masterclass in Kochi named ‘Stepping into the Film Industry’ under stage 14.
