Manju Borah is an Indian film director and screenwriter. She was born in Assam, North-Eastern India. She is a multiple national and international award-winning female director & short story writer from Guwahati, Assam. She belongs to the village, where various festivals like Raas, Bihu, and many plays & bhaonas organized on those occasions were part of her life. She studied Philosophy at Guwahati University. She is an avid reader and has read several great works of Assamese and world literature. When she was in an Assamese medium school, she started reading many English novels under the encouragement and guidance of her teachers. It had a significant impact on her practice as a writer. Moreover, she has an interest in watching films.
Manju Borah is one of the prominent filmmakers of Assam. In the beginning, she got an opportunity to work with Rajen Rajkhowa in his television show “Patharughate Ringiyai.” This gave her some first-hand experience in various aspects of filmmaking. Then, she went to Delhi, where she got an opportunity to work with Lampard, a British director working as a coordinator on a BBC television show. After returning to Assam, she teamed up with Rajen Rajkhowa for an Assamese feature film Sapon. During the shooting for this film, her co-workers inspired her lot to become an independent filmmaker. Her debut feature film “Baibhab,” was released in 1999. The film was honored with the Jury’s ‘Special Mention’ in the 47th National Film Festival, 2000, and was featured as the Best film in Asia at the 6th Dhaka International Film Festival, 2000. Also, she received the Gollapudi Srinivas Award for Best Debut Director in 1999.
In 2003, her film “Aakashitorar Kothare” received the National award for Best Regional Feature Film. In 2012, her film “Ko: Yad” was awarded National Awards for Best Mishing Film and Best Cinematography at the 60th National Film Awards. Also, she was awarded the Women of Excellence Award by FICCI for her outstanding contribution to the Entrepreneurship & Film in 2009 and the Satyajit Ray Memorial Award given by the Asian Film Foundation, 2012 for working to spread film culture in India as a lifetime mission.
