Deep Pal was named Abhijit Pal at the time of birth. Pal's first major Steadicam work was Ram Gopal Verma’s Shiva, regarded as a ground-breaking film in Telugu cinema in terms of the visual technique. While mainly acclaimed for increasing the role of image-stabilizing technology in Indian camerawork, there were several prior highlights under his name. Before the Steadicam, he cinematographed and directed several documentary films, including Cages (1984) on prostitution in Falkland Road in Mumbai, and Give us this Day our Daily Lunch (1985) based on the Dabbawala food delivery system in Mumbai. He passed away at 68 due to cancer on 7 October 2021 in Hyderabad, Telangana. His family includes his wife Yardley and son Joyojeet, a professor at the University of Michigan.
