Savita Singh, The Delhi-based cinematographer’s life starts in Delhi but to pursue her interest in the field of films, she moved to Mumbai for her graduation. She graduated from the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in 2007in the year 2007. Her graduation Hindi film named Karmasha has been granted the national award. One among the first women to have received the received a national award for cinematography in the non-feature category in the year 2009. For a 29-year-old graduate student, this was very much surprising and happy that she has been awarded alongside a great creative artist. This film was just a starting point to her career, and she is still experimenting. She is not only a cinematographer but also a filmmaker.
Savita was also among the founding members of the Indian Women Cinematographer’s Collective (IWCC). She never fails to impress all with her frames and camera techniques. Her initial films were the impact of her childhood memories of watching films in Doordarshan, which lead to the damn and mossy setting. In her 11 years and still counting years and years of experience with numerous people makes her try and experiment with new things. The advanced growth can be spotted in her latest movies like Phook (2008), Dhoosar, 404:error not found, and so on. She has received numerous international recognition, critics, and awards.
Her first film as director- DoP titled ‘SONSI’ has completely finished. She is still on her way, learning more from people who are more experienced. Today she stands along the frontline of Indian cinematographers. She is experimenting with fields like- motion pictures, documentaries, and so on. During the recent lockdown in 2020, the short film Devi, which was just mind-blowing, created a notable impact on youtube with 14 million views in 2 weeks, shows her skills are still going up, breaking all the barriers.
