Perhaps in some cases real life backgrounds get converted into reel life. One of the cases that come to mind was that of Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail, and that too in the 2008 award winning movie – “”. Of course when he did portray that role of a slum child, he himself was actually a 10 year old slum kid, living in the Garib Nagar slum located close by to the Bandra railway station of downtown Mumbai. Although it got him the Screen Actors Guild Award, it was not without controversies for the makers of the film. At one point, the producers were hesitant to use the slum kids as it was felt it would disturb their normal lives. However, the director, had no inhibitions, being clear in his mind that these kids deserve something better in the bargain. To counter other allegations of exploitation the makers of the film made it amply clear that their remuneration had been equivalent to that for the senior staff in UK. In order to deflect likely further criticism, they had also instituted a fund with a trust for these children for their future education. Close on the heels of the success of “Slumdog Millionaire”, he was given a role in another movie called “Kal Kisne Dekha” the very next year, but as normally happens, his own success could not be replicated, although the film had stars like Shah Rukh Khan, and in guest roles. Although the film career of Azhar did not progress much beyond, the happy thing is that not only he, but all the other kids too have progressed well with their education, all of them having learnt to speak English, which should now stand them in good stead no matter what they want to pursue in future. In fact, one of the less young child actors, , has got into a career of film making, and is seen often in with his work. It is good to see the care taken by the makers of the movies and how it impacted the lives of child actors with a slum background like Azhar.
