Nikhil Baran Sengupta was a well-known and talented art director, actor, painter and production designer in Hindi, Bengali and Oriya Film industry. Nikhil was born on 13 December 1943 in Chittagong, Bangladesh, India and grew up in Cuttack. Nikhil completed his schooling at Ranihat School in Cuttack and later went to Ravenshaw University. Nikhil’s interest in art has taken him to Kolkata to study art at the Government College of Art & Crafts. He completed his studies in 1969 and worked for many advertising agencies as a Visualiser and as an illustrator for many magazines. He was deeply into painting which made him organise a few exhibitions to show his work, but after he got into the film industry he never looked back at painting. Nikhil made his debut as an artist director with his movie “ “Gapa hele be Sata” (1975).

With over 40 years of career span in the film industry and achieving many awards such as Best Art Director for “Janani” in 1994 and 2009, he was awarded the Guru KeluCharan award in the lifetime achievement category. Nikhil left this world on 18 February 2014 at 70 in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India. His outstanding work and achievements have made him an inspiration for youth and given him widespread recognition and respect in the film industry.
