Hemu Gadhavi was born in 1929. He is a Gujarati singer and composer and is a well-known folk singer from DHANKANIYA (SAYLA), Gujarat. Hariba Gadhvi, his wife, provided him with unwavering support throughout his life. He died on August 20, 1965, and the loss of such a well-known performer was a terrible loss to the profession. Hemu has paired with Dina Gandharva for a lot of songs. Khamma Mara Nandjinalal, Morbini Waniyan Machhu Pani Jay, Kutchman Anjar Moto Sher Chhe, Ho Rang Rasiya Kyan Rami Aavya, Marun Vanravan Chhe Rudun, Ame Maiyaran Re Gokul Gamana, Sona Vatakdi Re are few of his popular songs.

Hemu Gadhvi was an Indian songwriter, playwright, singer, actor, and composer who had mainly worked in Gujarati film, television, stage, and radio. He was a supporter of the folk music of Saurashtra. He was born on September 4, 1929. Hemu Gadhvi’s place of birth is Dhankania village in Sayla taluka of Surendranagar district, Gujarat. Nanbha Gadhavi was his father, while Baluba Gadhavi was his mother. He married Haiba Gadhavi, with whom he had a son named Biharidan Gadhavi. His son is also a singer.

Hemu Gadhvi had developed his interest in folk songs and hymns from his childhood. When he was fourteen years old, he joined Shakti Prabhav Kalamandir with a Rs. fifteen per month salary. He captivated the people’s minds with his performance as Krishna in the debut play “ Muralidhar Bio coming soon... >> Read More... .” Hemu Gadhvi also sang the first song titled “Gamdu Mujne Pyare Gokul” in the play. He successfully portrayed the female character of Ranakdevi in a play, “Ranakdevi” at Jamnagar. Gradually, he started to learn Charan literature. He also used Charan literature in singing folk songs & performing plays. Therefore, Hemu Gadhvi began working in Rajkot’s Chaitanya Drama Company and Wankaner Drama Company till 1955.

In 1955, Hemu Gadhvi got an offer to work at All India Radio (Akashvani) by Chandrakantabhai Bhatt & Gijubhai Vyas, who saw his work during the plays. As a Tanpura artist, he joined Akashvani Rajkot. During that time, Hemu Gadhvi studied the literature of Dula Bhaya Kag and Zaverchand Mrghani and gave voice to folk music. Through Akashvani, he also delivered it to the homes of Gujarat. Thus, he served at Rajkot All India Radio (AIR) till nineteen. In 1962 - 63, the Columbia Company released their album titled “Sony Halaman May Ujali” by Hemu Gadhvi. In addition, HMV released records such as Ame Mahiyara Re, Morbi ni Vaniyan, and Shivaji Nu Halardu, which became very famous throughout Gujarat. Besides this, he performed in several plays, such as Prithviraj Chauhan and Satyavadi Raja Harischandra.

Hemu Gadhvi received several awards over the course of his career. He won the Best Folk Music Award by the President of India, Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan. He earned the Best Folk Singer's Pride Award from the Gujarat Government. He also received the Best Playback Singer Award for the Gujarati film, "Kasumbi No Rang.” Hemu Gadhvi died at the young age of thirty-six. While recording Rasadas at Akashvani-Paddhari, he was affected by dizziness because of a hemorrhage. Later, in his memory, the "Late Hemu Gadhvi Smriti SansthanTrust” was established. It inaugurated folk music activities, media management, and a memorial in the name of “Hemtirth” at his village Dhankania in 2013. The highway in the city of Rajkot was named "Hemu Gadhvi Marg” by the Rajkot Municipal Corporation.
