Aalayam is a Tamil TV serial. It premiered in 1995. It was telecasted again in 2014 and aired on the SUN TV channel. Dr. S. Krishnaswamy is the director, and Dr. Mohana is the producer. The show is dubbed in Tamil. The original show is in Hindi named Upasana. The plot is based on the book of Sillappadikaram and Manimegalai, one of the oldest manuscripts in Tamil. The book was written by Ilango Adigal and Seethalai Sathankar in the 2nd century. The show is set in the backdrop of Tamil Nadu in the 2nd century. The Tamils are portrayed to have a flourishing trade with foreign countries like China, Rome, and other countries in the East. It is the wedding of Kovalan and Kannagi. Kovalan is the son of a merchant, Masathuvan, and Kannagi is the daughter of a merchant, Mayanaka. Kannagi is a virtuous and beautiful lady. Both families have flourishing maritime businesses. Both get married and live happily. Shortly after, Kovalan falls in love with Madhavi.
Madhavi was a dancer and a courtesan. Kovalan is impressed by her dancing and honors her with gold. In his dazzled state, he marries Madhavi by exchanging a garland and forgets about his innocent wife, Kannagi. He abandons Kannagi and starts living with Madhavi. At an Indra festival, Madhavi had many suitors. It dawned upon Kovalan that she did not love him. He regretted his mistakes. His mind had now become steady as compared to his pre-youth years. He now yearns for his wife, Kannagi. He separates from Madhavi, leaving her heartbroken. He went back to his wife. Kannagi accepts him and forgives him for his adultery. But he had finished all his wealth while living with Madhavi. He wished to earn his wealth back. He went to Madurai, the Pandyan empire, with his wife to begin trading. The wife encouraged Kovalan to sell her anklets to rebuild their life.
When Kovalan goes to sell them, a wicked goldsmith sees him with an anklet dazzled with gems, he instantly thinks that Kovalan has stolen them from the Queen. He is presented in court to the King, where he kills Kovalan without investigating the matter. Kannagi hears of this and rushes to the court to see her husband’s dead body. She pulls out the other pair of her anklets to prove that it was indeed hers. The anklet was far more bejeweled than the Queen’s. The King cries and accepts his folly. In a state of rage, Kannagi curses the king and his kingdom to burn. The King of Madurai and the public of Madurai suffer and die.
