Mahabharata Odia is a serial that was telecasted in the regional language of Orissa as a dub version of the original serial that was telecasted in Hindi. The serial is a depiction of the ancient text of Mahabharata and what went down in the history of India. The serial begins with Bhisma returning to the kingdom of Hastinapur and being crowned as the Crown Prince of the kingdom. Bhisma is the son of Shantanu and Ganga. Later when a fisherwoman named Satyavati falls in love with Shantanu, Satyavati’s father agrees to the marriage on the condition that his grandchildren will have the right to the throne. To see that no injustice falls upon this oath Bhisma decides to take the oath of celibacy so that his father can marry Satyavati. Happy and relieved with this decision and sacrifice, Shantanu grants Bhisma a boon to die in the way desired.

Shantanu and Satyavati later become parents to two kids named Chintrangada and Vichitravirya. After 25 years when Chintrangada dies, Satyavati advices Bhisma to win three princesses of the kingdom of Kashi for Vichitravirya. However, the eldest princess Amba refuses to marry Vichitravirya and sets forth a chain of events that leads to Bhisma’s teacher Parshurama fighting Bhisma on Amba’s behalf. Lord Shiva stops the fight and soon Amba dies. Before her death, Amba vows and curses that she will be the reason for Bhisma’s death. Vichitravirya marries Amba’s sisters named Ambika and Ambalika but dies leaving no heirs to the throne.

Ved Vyasa who was the son of Satyavati through the occult is requested to help them and he does so by impregnating them the same way through the occult. However, he also manages to impregnate another maid named Prishrami along with Ambika and Ambalika. Ambika gives birth to Dhritarashtra while Ambalika gives birth to Pandu. Parishrami becomes the mother of Vidura. Hence begins the legend of Mahabharata. After 25 years Amba gets reincarnated as Shikandini in the kingdom of Panchal. King Drupad immediately recognizes her destiny and states that she will be the death of Bhisma and have her revenge. Bhisma goes to Gandhar asking for King Subal’s daughter Gandhari’s hand in marriage to Dhritarashtra. Gandhari has a boon to bear a hundred sons and this puts Dhritarashtra at a great advantage.

However, when Gandhari comes to know that her to-be husband is blind she decides to blindfold herself for a lifetime to share his pain. When her brother Shakuni learns of this he vows to destroy Bhisma for destroying the life of his sister. Dhritarashtra eventually accepts Gandhari as his wife, however, in the matters of the throne he is initially rejected because of his blindness but when Pandu gets cursed to not having an heir Dhritarashtra gets the title of de-facto ruler of Hastinapur. Pandu had married Princess Kunti of the kingdom of Kunti along with Princess Madri of the kingdom of Madra, but he had later been cursed to die should he ever attempt to impregnate either of them. Hence, sad and heartbroken he decided to renounce the kingdom of Hastinapur along with his two wives.

After a period of time, Gandhari gets pregnant and eventually gives birth to a lump of flesh which upon being cut by Ved Vyasa turns into 101 children, 100 sons known as the Kauravas and a daughter Dushala. On the other hand, Kunti uses the boon given to her to obtain sons from whichever Gods she wishes and shares this boon with Madri to achieve a complete family. Kunti eventually gives birth to Yudhisthira, Bhima, and Arjun, while Madri gives birth to twins Nakula and Sahadeva. Time flies and after 15 years Pandu gets captivated by the beauty of Madri once more and unable to restrain himself has sexual intercourse with her ignoring Madri’s protests and attempts to fend him off. This greatly costs him his life as the curse placed upon him takes effect. Overcome with guilt and remorse Madri decides to end her life along with her husband via the act of Sati and this leaves Kunti with all the sons under her care and protection.

She decides to return to Hastinapur with her sons. In the kingdom of Hastinapur, the Kauravas are depicted as evil and are led by their eldest brother Duryodhana who shares a special bond with his uncle Shakuni and looks up to his counsel. When the Pandavas return to Hastinapur, the Kauravas don’t like their presence and immediately notice the righteous nature of the Pandavas. Shakuni tries to poison Bhima but is unsuccessful as Bhima is protected by his great-grandfather Naag Raaj. Shakuni eventually gets banished from the kingdom by Bhisma and all the young princes are sent to pursue their education and battle training under Guru Dronacharya. Dronacharya begins teaching everyone including his own son Ashwatthama. After they have completed their education, all of the princes return to Hastinapur where a competition is held in order to judge and determine the best warrior and showcase all of their skills. It is here that Arjuna meets Karna. Arjuna is declared as the best archer but even he admits that Karna is the only person who can challenge him in archery regarding his skills.

Karna is later revealed to be Kunti’s lost son who she had obtained from the sun god Surya before her marriage with Pandu. Later, Dronacharya with the help of all the princes manages to defeat King Drupad who had once betrayed him after becoming king, and this event leads to the partition of the kingdom of Panchal. King Drupad gets to keep one-half of the divided kingdom while Aswatthama rules the second half. Yudhisthira is made the Crown Prince of Hastinapur since he's the eldest and this event stirs a revolt among the Kauravas who were rooting for Duryodhana. Arjuna meets and befriends his cousin Lord Krishna who is the founder and King of Dwarka and helps him to unite with his love interest princess Rukmini. The Kauravas try to kill the five brothers which eventually leads the five brothers to flee the castle and stay in hiding and exile so that the others believe them to be dead for good.

It is in this period of time that Bhima defeats a demon Hidimba but ends up marrying the demon’s sister Hidimbi and together they become parents to a son named Ghatotkacha. Meanwhile, enraged with Drona, King Drupad gets a son Dhristhadyumna, and a daughter Draupadi born from fire in order to seek vengeance on Drona. Draupadi later gets married to Arjuna and via a series of unfortunate events ends up having to marry all the Pandava brothers. Draupadi later becomes the reason for an eternal rift to form between the Kauravas and the Pandavas. When the Kauravas and especially Duryodhana win a game of dice against Yudhisthira representing the Pandavas, the Pandavas get stripped of their title as princes and they lose their kingdom, title, and their common wife Draupadi.

Duryodhana commands Dushashana to publicly humiliate Draupadi by disrobing her in front of everyone, however, Draupadi’s honour and dignity are saved by Lord Krishna. The Kauravas' are looked down upon because of their inhuman acts but they merely laugh. Draupadi curses them and vows to get her revenge someday. The Pandavas along with Draupadi are forced into exile hereafter. As the serial progresses we see how this act gradually leads to a sequence of events, eventually leading to the biggest and most horrific war amidst the legends, the war of Kurukshetra which involved both the Pandavas and the Kauravas. The Pandavas had Lord Krishna on their side while the Kauravas took Lord Krishna's army. The way Pandavas pave their way through the war and how they take revenge by fighting for justice is what is contained in the rest of the serial.
