Gandharva Sangeetham is the oldest TV show to be aired on Kairali TV, a Malayalam language TV channel. It is also the oldest music talent show of the Kerala television industry. The show started in 2000 and ran till 2013. It is created by the channel’s CEO and Swaralaya, a music and cultural organisation, as a tribute to Gana Gandharva K. J. Yesudas, an Indian playback singer and musician who sings Indian classical, devotional, and cinematic songs. The term ‘Gandharva’ is used in the musical world to felicitate skilled singers, mostly classical music. It is aptly given for K. J. Yesudas, practically a musical royalty in Kerala. Gandharva Sangeetham is a music talent show that is solely dedicated to K. J. Yesudas and his songs.
After the wide reception of the first season, they have branched out and made two shows, one for seniors, people above the age of 15, and juniors, for those below 15. Gandharva Sangeetha now has more than ten seasons, including both seniors and juniors segments. One might wonder how a show can spread for so many seasons and allow only the songs of one particular singer. It is possible because K. J. Yesudas has recorded over 50,000 songs in a number of Indian languages, including Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Kannada, Bengali, Odia, as well as Arabic, English, Latin, and Russian. However, the show only features Malayalam songs. The singers are free to pick any song they like to sing as long as it was originally sung by K. J. Yesudas. Owing to its length in the history of music shows, Gandharva Sangeetha has produced a number of talents for the Malayalam music industry.
A lot of talented singers we see now have set foot on the stage of Gandharva Sangeetha. Like any other music show, Gandharva Sangeetha Senior 2 also had people from the music industry as judges. They would critic the contestants’ voice, tone, and other factors. It is quite difficult to recreate a song sung by a musical legend, which is why the contestants took the criticism sportively and aimed to do better for their next performance. The show has eliminations along the way, and the final performance was witnessed by a huge number of audience and renowned singers. The final winners are announced and felicitated by the guest of honour, K. J. Yesudas. Receiving a prize from the musical legend himself is a greater honour and achievement than actually winning the prize. Over the years, a lot of singers were recipients of this honour.
