Aviyal is a Malayalam language TV show that airs on the channel Surya TV. The show premiered on television every Friday for half an hour from 12 pm to 12:30 pm. Aviyal is an Indian dish with origins in the Kerala region. It is usually prepared during fasting times. Fasting is a common practice for people around the world. Some do it for health and fitness purposes, and some do it on religious grounds. In India, it is seen in many religions of India as a penance to god. It is most commonly seen in Hindus, some follow it every week, and some do it during auspicious days. Muslims do it during the Ramadan season.
Christians fast during the Lent days. For Buddhists, fasting is an integral part of their lifestyle. Some people only eat non-rice items after the fast at the end of the day. The happiness of eating the first meal after a day of fast is unmatched. Just because you’re fasting doesn’t mean you can’t eat delicious food. The show, Aviyal, features such delicious snack/tiffin items. The anchors, one male and one female, visit the houses of the chefs for the day. Viewers are asked to send their entries to the channel through emails and calls.
Selected ones are contacted prior and are asked to set up a kitchen in their house. The anchors visit them, one per episode, and present the show from their houses. The rest of the show goes on like any other cookery show. The recipe of the dish is explained, starting with the ingredients and then the procedure. Throughout the show, the anchors keep interacting with the guests by talking about their interests and life in general. It ends with everyone tasting the dish.
