Its story switched back and forth from the year 2020 to the flashbacks of 1989-1990 throughout the series. The Islamic militants banished Kashmiri Hindu Pandits from the Kashmir valley in 1989-1990.

Teacher Pushkar Nath Pandit’s (Anupam Kher) son, Karan, was accused of being an Indian spy. Fearing his safety, Pushkar requests his friend Brahma Dutta (Mithun Chakraborty), an IAS officer, to keep his son safe. Upon reaching Kashmir, Brahma witnessed the atrocities against Kashmiri Pandits. He contacted the Chief Minister of J&K regarding the issue and got suspended.

The Islamic militant and ex-student of Pushkar, Farooq Malik Bitta, breached the home of Pushkar. Karan hides in a rice container but is found and shot. The daughter-in-law of Pushkar, Sharada, was made to eat the bloody rice to save their lives. Pushkar takes Karan to a hospital that was also seized by the militants, not allowing the non-Muslims to get any treatment. Due to this, Karan succumbs to his injuries. They tried to seek shelter in the house of a friend, Kaul, who also got killed.

After that, the Kashmiri Pandits started living in Jammu as refugees in battered conditions. On the other hand, Brahma became the advisor of the new Governor of J&K. Later, Brahma managed to get a government job for Sharada at Nadimarg in Kashmir, and the family shifted there.

However, fate takes a gruesome turn when Bitta and his militants, dressed as the Indian army, reach there. They rounded up all the Kashmiri Pandits to a commonplace. Sharada resisted when her elder son got targeted. Angered by this, Farooq killed her in the most gruesome way. Later, he shot everyone in a mass grave, leaving only Pushkar alive to spread the word. In the present day, the younger son of Sharda, Krishna (Darshan Kumar), is oblivious to anything and living with Pushkar. He believes that his parents died in an accident. He studies at ANU. He contests for the students’ election in ANU and holds the Indian Government responsible for the Kashmir issue, angering Pushkar.

When Pushkar died, Krishna went to their ancestral home in Kashmir to scatter his ashes, according to his last wish. There, he meets Bitta and accuses him of the situation of the Pandits. Bitta shamelessly declares himself a new-age Gandhi, leading a non-violent democratic movement. He also blames the Indian army for killing Krishna’s mother and brother. When Krishna asks Brahma about it, he shows him a file maintained by Pushkar containing newspaper cuttings, clearly telling the truth.

Finally, Krishna returns to Delhi and gives his speech for the university presidential elections, elaborating on everything he discovered, including the atrocities endured by his family. It shocked his mentor professor and other students, ridiculing him. However, eventually, some students welcomed his speech with good heart.
