Following in the footsteps of the much-loved Balikavadhu aired on Colors TV, the Balikavadhu season 2 also depicts the story of another little girl by the same name as Anandhi. Like the previous Anandhi, she too is engaged while she was still an infant, to her father’s friend Prem Ji’s son, upon Prem Ji’s insistence. The show like its predecessor, addresses the social evil of child marriage, which though being banned by law is still widely practised in several parts of the country, especially in the rural heartland. Aside from the main focus on child marriage, the show also explores dowry deaths and abuses and other such socially relevant topics such as wife-beating and gender discrimination etc.

The story is essentially about the protagonist Anandhi’s life. Her birth was an instance of great celebration and happiness for not only her father and mother, Khimji and Ratan Ben respectively, but for Premji and his family as well, who promptly arranges for pompous festivities to honour her birth. Premji believes that as he and Khimji are close friends and their deep connection can be further cemented by placing a marriage tie between the two families; hence the idea of marrying Anandhi with his eldest son comes up. Thus, despite being strictly outlawed by the law of the land, the two friends proceed to conduct the wedding, though Khimji is a bit concerned. Everything finally falls in place and the two children are now married. However, the news that a child marriage is being conducted reaches the police somehow and the police promptly arrive at the supposed venue; which is then found to be deserted as the wedding party has already left the place.

Integrated with the main plot are several parallel threads, such as Anandhi’s closest friend who often is humiliated publicly as her mother died while birthing her. And there is another story of a beautiful bride, whose beauty stirs up such furore in the village that her own husband stops her from going out or participating in any social function. He even bars her from teaching Anandhi Garba, the traditional dance form. However unbeknownst to him, she teaches Anandhi the dance moves every time when she visits the temple. As Anandhi grows up, she is as curious as any kid but is also intensely aware of her surroundings and bombards her parents with a volley of questions which often stumps them. It is obvious that the girl is not only caring and considerate she is also a diligent observer possessing a keen eye for details. Balika Vadhu 2 airs on Colors TV at 8 Pm from Monday to Friday.
