Grey’s Anatomy Season 3 started on 21 September 2006, and it ended on 17 May 2007. It was telecast at a new time slot which was on every Thursday at 9 pm. This season continued the story of previous seasons as the interns face the different things related to field of medicine, resulting in their personal evolution. This season focuses on the challenges that are caused by the last phase of their internship, combining with their professional life as shown in the season 1 and also with their personal background shown in season 2.

The show begins with interns supporting Izzie’s decision to quit the program after Denny’s death. Meredith is confused with her and Derek’s relation. Adele gives Webber a choice between her or his career, and Derek reveals about her feelings for Meredith to George, when latter asks him for relationship advice.

Cristina’s first impression on Burke’s parents is very bad and she gets to know that he is a mama’s boy. George is insecure about Callie, and Meredith decides to date both Finn and Derek. Cristina helps Burke to overcome his hand tremor, and Izzie fails to return to hospital. Meanwhile, Addison keeps on refusing to Mark who wants to get back together with her. Meredith has to undergo surgery as her appendix bursts, and Derek breaks up with Addison. Meredith and Addison apologises to each other. Preston and Cristina hides from others that Preston cannot do surgery alone, and Izzie receives 8.7 million dollars as Denny’s wish by his father. Derek and Addison get divorced in which Derek gives almost all his properties to Addison. Izzie is kept on probation when she returns.

George ends his relationship with Callie, and Meredith takes her relationship with Derek slow while Derek decides to maintain a civilized relationship with Addison. Alex realises that he still has feelings for Izzie, while Cristina tells about Burke to chief in her guilt because of which he gets replaced by Dr. Hahn as Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery and is also warned by Chief who had decided to give his position to Burke after his retirement. Mark and Addison realizes that they still feel for each other; and Meredith’s half-sister, Molly, goes into labour for which she tells her stepmother that they are not family and also tells Ellis that Richard will not meet her from now. Ellis blames Meredith to be the reason of her being alone which shatters Meredith. Thatcher Grey visits the hospital for Molly, and George and Callie reunite. Addison reveals that she aborted her and Mark’s baby to Callie as he can never be a good father. Because of Izzie’s donation, a little young girl is able to start a new life. With his father death, George is shattered and he proposes to Callie.

Chief announces his retirement as he chooses his wife over career which makes everyone fight for his position. Bailey wants to create a free medical clinic for which Izzie decides to invest, and named it as Denny Duquette Memorial Clinic. Burke also proposes to Cristina; and when Richard returns home, he sees his wife with some other man.

Meredith looks after a girl but falls in water and when finally Derek manages to save her, she is almost dead due to hypothermia. Meredith is not responding to any treatment which shatters Derek and then a small segment of other universe is shown where Meredith is talking with her deceased acquaintances and after some time, her mother also joins them as she had cardiac arrest when she is blamed by Derek for Meredith’s condition.

Ellis declares her respect & love for Meredith; and after she tells her to wake up, Meredith finally wakes up. Colin Marlow who is revealed to be Professor of Cristina and also that they were in secret relationship, enters the fight to become Chief; and Cristina and Burke’s relationship starts getting worsen. It is revealed to George that Callie is rich which she hid to test his love, and Alex continues working with Jane Doe.

Alex moves in with Meredith and had a dinner with Meredith’s father & stepmother. Izzie confesses to Addison that she felt right having an affair with George even after knowing he is married.

Izzie’s daughter comes to the hospital for leukaemia treatment and she is told by her adoptive parents to donate her bone marrow, but she is sad as her daughter does not even want to see her. Derek thinks his relation with Meredith to be the only hindrance between him becoming Chief.

Colin tries to make Cristina agree to break up with Burke. The interns start preparing for their exam which will determine their entire residency. Addison gets devastated as she finds out that she cannot become mother, and leaves from hospital. Cristina plans her marriage and is irritated by her and Burke’s mothers, and makes Callie the bridesmaid. Susan dies and Thatcher blames Meredith for it. George joins another hospital which makes Callie to doubt his loyalty.

Addison comes to know that Adele is pregnant but she suffers from a miscarriage whereas Richard comes to know that it was his baby. Callie is appointed as the new Chief Resident, and Derek as the Chief of Surgery which he refuses to accept. Cristina and Burke’s marriage day arrives, and because of Cristina’s nervousness Burke finds out that he does not really love real her and leaves her. Meredith and Derek break up, and George fails in his exam.
