Earlier it was produced by Shobhana Desai under her own banner, Shobhana Desai Productions. The series started on March 4, 2001, and was aired on Sony TV every Thursday at 8:30 p.m. Hum Pardesi Ho Gaye was nominated in the Indian Telly Awards for the category of TV Lyricist and TV Director of the Year, in 2002. It was shot in abroad.

The story revolves around the life of the young and well-read girl named, Mallika ,played by Kartika Rane. She suddenly gets married to an NRI who resides in America. Parents of Mallika were both innocent became voluntary victims of their daughter’s successful future in some distant land. The story depicts Mallika’s struggle afterward, when hurdles arise. This heart-wrenching television serial is an alarm to those parents who allow their daughters to get married to a groom that they are not familiar with. They hope of a life full of profusion after marrying rich young men however sometimes itends up in a tragedy. Mallika gets married to Rahul, played by Aashish Chaudhary.

Rahul doesn’t love her but he marries her for he needs someone to take care of his parents and accompany them anywhere. But he is nice and pleasent to Mallika. Rahul is in love with his boss, Maya, played by Perizaad Zorabian, an Indian-American-based girl waiting for him in the US. Maya is not, a bad person but she sometimes becomes complicated with her father, who thinks of nothing but their company. She treats Rahul as her best friend. Rahul and hisparents are her only source of strengthand she doesn’t believe in marriage.

Mallika was unaware of Rahul’s inclination towards Maya. She tried everything to win her husband’s heart but always failed. Maya is oblivious of Rahul’smarriage to Mallika and thinks that Rahul is only hers. Until Karva Chauth, a North Indian festival for women who hope for their husband’s long life happened. Mallika is excited and very eager to attend the fortunate day and prepare prayers with her mother-in-law. They also invite some of their neighbors and then, destiny plays its hand. Being unaware to Maya and Rahul’s affair, she unknowingly invites Maya to the celebration. However, Maya turns down the invitation and decides to keep the fast also for Rahul. It now becomes a question of, who will win Rahul’s heart.

Later, Maya and Rahul’s affair will be exposed and Mallika will decide to leave her husband and take his disabled father-in-law with her.
