Plot

Rajaram, an orator and a writer, had a small family including his wife and his son. His son Sidharth, had a sharp and quick witted mind. Like every father, Rajaram also dreamt of his son becoming a well-reputed teacher in their native village. However, Sidharth had different plans for himself. He wanted to go abroad for his studies, to earn lots of money, and to live a comfortable and peaceful life. He thinks it is very selfish of his parents to use him to fulfill their desire.

Sidharth completed his studies and left the country to pursue further studies without thinking about his parents. Rajaram in his older days feels neglected and pine for his only son's love. He then decides to leave his home and remain at an orphanage where older people abandoned by their children stay. Sidharth realizes that it's too late for him to come back to his hometown. He could've taken care of his parents when he had time.

Star performance

Nedumudi Venu played the role of Rajaram and Rahul Madhav played the role of Sidharth. The movie revolves around these lead characters only. Both of them delivered excellent acting, adding depthness and emotion to the plot. Nedumudi handled narrative, story and therefore, played a significant role. The execution of the script by actors is admirable. The bond between father and son is a problematic one. Minor actors like Geetha Vijayan played the role of Sidharth's mother. She delivered mature acting and honesty in her character. Other actors like Indrans, Sidhartha Siva delivered nuanced performances throughout the film.

Analysis

Rajaram narrates the story. It explores flashback technique, that means first presenting the backdrop story and then the present scenario. It is a non linear narrative. The film explores the theme of family relations in nuclear families where parents solely depend on their children. It also comments on the younger generation that are shown emotionless beings and a critique to the people who leave their parents in orphanages in their old ages. The focus is mainly on the father-son bond, where the father had different plans for his son but the son desired something else.

The character of Rahul Madhav undergoes various developments and turns into a mature person. However his character faces complexities of human ambitions. His desire to leave the country and go abroad contradicted Rajaram's vision for him. The plot is quite unpredictable, which adds value to the story. With the blend of exciting script and outstanding direction, the movie delivered what everyone expected. Overall, the film explores the theme of regret, shame, guilt, and struggles involved in battling one's inner demons.

What's there?

  • The movie is a family-centred drama.
  • It provides a critique on complexities that arise between generation gaps within a family.
  • The actors delivered quite admirable performances.
  • The story presented realistic cinematography.
  • Moral values like family bond, hope, longing, selfishness, regret, and guilt were showcased.
  • The soundtracks are very enjoyable.

What's not there?

  • The use of flashback technique made the narrative unclear.
  • There was a lack of depth in the movie. Some scenes were very emotional, while some weren't.
  • The script missed the backdrop story as a result of the nonlinear narrative.
  • It had a complex plot which made the film's end boring. Infact, it deserved a better ending.

Verdict

Kadhantharam is a must-watch movie. It is to be watched with family, elders, and kids to understand the family dynamics presented within the story. It explores different perspectives of different characters by using depth in the script.

However, if you don't like drama then one might need to think twice before watching the movie. It is also a slow paced movie.
