Prague Click to look into! >> Read More... ” falls into the category of a psychological thriller, and the events in the movie all take place in the capital of the Czech Republic, although the main characters of the film are all Indians. Being predominantly a psychological film it has been handled somewhat on the lines of serious theatre, with frequent soliloquies. Not being part of mainstream cinema, it would need patient following of the script to appreciate the nuances in the film.

Plot: The film deals with the hidden strife within the central protagonist Chandan ( Chandan Roy Sanyal Chandan Roy Sanyal is a star of both Hindi and Ben >> Read More... ), an ardent architect who moves over to Prague on a research endowment for a memorial on World War II World War II is a Malayalam information TV show on >> Read More... victims. He moves to Prague along with his mentor like companion Gulshan ( Mayank Kumar Mayank Kumar (Mayank Kalra) is an actor well-known >> Read More... ), with whom he shares his room, but seems always to hold him in awe. During his sojourn in Prague, he comes across Elena ( Elena Kazan This Moscow-born Elena always wanted to be a Bolly >> Read More... ), a Czech gypsy girl, with whom Chandan immediately he gets emotionally attached in a very intense way. But this also starts the conflicts within him, due to his past life in India, which seems to be nagging him all the while. He even starts losing faith in himself.

Chandan’s experiences have made him mistrust his own shadow, and his insecurities have made his life almost unbearable. He frequently thinks of his friend Arfie ( Arfi Lamba Arfi Lamba belongs to that category of actors who >> Read More... ) in India, and holds himself responsible for his death, while Gulshan with whom he shares his room appears to be a mental image of his own second convoluted self. Chandan's mentally unbalanced condition is so severe that it prevents him from maintaining normal friendly relations with others, haunted as he is with the past, and confused as he is with his current acquaintances. Even his professional pursuits seem to be slipping by, and at one stage he contemplates abandoning the project for which he had been to Prague.

Review: Starting with a bunch of relatively new actors (except the lead actor), director Ashish Shukla, himself a debutant, has woven a film of important content and has handled a difficult theme with immense dexterity. He also deserves credit for having taken up a genre that is predominantly psychological as his first foray into filmmaking. What strikes out remarkably is the structuring, the overall ambience of the settings, matching with the mental condition of the protagonist. This draws the serious moviegoer totally into the heart of the film and makes him understand the internal conflicts of the prime character even better. All the actors play out their roles in a fitting manner as demanded by the requirements of the screenplay. The theater background of many of them has perhaps helped them to achieve the standards they do in the film. Even the cinematography and the background score heighten the overall mood of the film and deserve specific mention.

Verdict: Admittedly this is not a mainstream movie, but for the select few who like serious movies and for those willing to get into learning how to appreciate such movies, this is an almost must see movie to understand the extending domain of Bollywood.
