Plot

In “Gulabo Sitabo,” Amitabh Bachchan plays Mirza, an elderly man who lives in a rundown mansion called Fatima Mahal. Mirza is the landlord and has been renting out rooms in the mansion for years, but he always finds devious ways to make more money. One of his tenants is Baankey (played by Ayushmann Khurrana), a poor man who lives there with his family. He is always behind on his rent, which frustrates Mirza. The two men have a estranged relationship, with Mirza constantly trying to evict Baankey and his family.

Things take a turn when it is brought to their knowledge that the mansion is owned by Mirza’s wife, Begum, and there is a legal battle between the two of them over who has the right to sell the mansion. Meanwhile, Baankey and his family are caught in the middle of the dispute, which makes them worried about losing their home.

As the legal battle continues and tensions rise between Mirza and Baankey, they confront their flaws and the consequences of their actions. At last fate of the mansion and the people who live in it is left uncertain, as the two men come to a fragile understanding of their shared history and future.

Star Performance

Amitabh Bachchan delivers an incredible performance as the sly, manipulative and miser landlord.  He adapts the character of Mirza with such ease that it is impossible to take your eyes off him.

Ayushmann Khurrana, on the other hand, plays the role of the irritable and short-tempered tenant with equal finesse. He brings a natural flair to the character of Baankey, making the audience empathize with his struggles and root for his victory.

Analysis

Director Shoojit Sircar’s  direction in “Gulabo Sitabo”  is distinct and subtle, with attention paid to detail in every scene. The cinematography for the film is done by Avik Mukhopadhyay,  which is underrated, yet impactful. The film is set in Old Lucknow and is beautifully captured, with the narrow lanes, old buildings, and crowded streets adding to the film’s overall aesthetic. The film's music was composed by Shantanu Moitra,  with lyrics by Dinesh Pant. The music of “Gulabo Sitabo” is very basic, with only a few songs in the film. The music serves to enhance the narrative of the film.

What’s There?

  • The film’s biggest strength lies in the blending of complex emotions with humour.
  • It manages to capture the essence of the old city of Lucknow with its rich cultural heritage and architecture while also showcasing the harsh realities of urbanization.
  • The dialogues, written by Juhi Chaturvedi,  are sharp, witty and perfectly capture the local dialect of Lucknow.

What’s Not There?

  • The film’s slow pace and deliberate storytelling may not be for everyone liking.
  • The film’s ends may also feel a bit abrupt and unresolved for some viewers, although it perfectly captures the essence of the films underlying theme – the inevitability of change and the power dynamics that come with it.

Verdict

Gulabo Sitabo is a delightful film that offers a refreshing take on human relationships and urbanization. Amitabh Bachchan and Ayushmann Khurrana deliver stellar performances, and the film’s witty dialogues and charming music add to its overall appeal. While it may not be a film for everyone, it is a must-watch for those who appreciate the art of storytelling and distinct performances.
