Running parallel to the novel's plot, the focus is on a Bangladeshi citizen of the name Rais Bhuiyan, who moves to the US after the attacks of 9/11 to work in the technology industry. He becomes one of the unfortunate victims of Mark Stroman, a vigilante who starts to kill anyone who looks like a Muslim, believing each one is a terrorist. He is eventually caught and sentenced to death, but Bhuiyan doesn't feel any content, believing the idea of war must be eradicated, and not the humans propelling it.
