Plot

The plot of the story revolves around a girl named Tina. Her nationality is Chinese. She is a college graduate and presently, lives with her boyfriend. They live in London. Her boyfriend is a British architecture student.

During 2007-2008, when global financial crisis hit London, Tina struggled to support her daily expenses without any source of income. With low education qualifications, Tina was not able to get a job. However, one day she got a job offer of a receptionist in a illegal massage parlor. The parlour was running on bad terms. While working there, Tina discovered hardships that every woman usually goes through. She remained constantly surrounded by violence and danger. The neighbourhood around the parlor is dull, grey and quite depressing. They trade women from the salon sex.

The main character of the story is Tina. Teresa Daley played her role. Tina is a graduate student who is desperately finding a source of income to support her survival. Teresa presents her character beautifully. She added depth to Tina’s character. Teresa portrayed her as a unique and intense character. She amazingly balances her emotions in harrowing scenes. Another important character is Sasa. Chen Shiang-Chi plays Sasa’s character. She is an average worker at the salon. Analysis

The Receptionist is a fantastic film to watch. It is a commentary on young people specifically women who are seeking income, not for the drugs or alcohol but for their survival. It presents a sad reality of young people in metropolitan cities. The film rightly shows the authenticity of sex trade in downtrodden countries. However, there are few shortcomings of the movie. The story of various characters is left untold. For instance, the ending of Sasa’s character is not clear. Also, the dialogue can be better. The filmmakers need to work more on actor’s dialogues. It is a low buget movie but overall all the elements of the film are good. The script of the film is tender as it provides a critique on the social behaviour towards the young desperate girls. The film’s writers did a nuanced social study, making a fantastic movie. The storyline is unique and simple to understand. Tina’s character is the main focus of the film. The director has done an appreciable work.

The filmmakers didn’t shy away from showing the harsh realities of women in the society. Not only the script, but the execution of the script is also elegant. The direction of the script is top-notch. Although the chemistry between the main actors and the supporting cast is palpable. The film also has an outstanding cinematography. The shots taken are perfect. The leading and supporting actors individually provided an impressive performances.
