Plot
An ill movie star coming to terms with his past and morality.
Star Performance
Even though the character and the story is highly cliched Sam Elliott does deliver a good and vulnerable performance. The rest of the actors also lent great support. Nick Offerman as the friend is delightful.
Analysis
The story of this film is as cliche as they come. You can see the coming events from a mile away. The film is sweet in its entirety and emotional, but the apparent storyline makes it dense. There is nothing wrong in making a cliched film but atleast put an effort to make the scenes memorable. This film is vanilla in its approach. There is sentimental value especially with a famous star but the random nature of it just turns you off. There are some odd storylines, like Lee dating a girl half his age and it doesn’t end there. There is more she looks like his daughter, that's the weird part. The other actors also just make an appearance, and they go. Nick Offerman’s character is the only friend of Lee and also his drug dealer. The relationship between Lee(Sam Elliott) and Charlotte(Laura Prepon) from a character and story standpoint doesn't make any sense. Her character traits is that she’s a comedian and likes poetry which the makers tried to add nuance but failed miserably. The actors have done their job even though the character writing is a downer in this film every actor has put forth a formidable performance. Lee’s inner turmoil is not fleshed out well; he's primarily stoic and shifty. The Hero can make you cry but if you’re looking for something nuanced and memorable this film is not up for it. Another plus point would be your memories with the actor Sam Elliott.

Verdict
The Hero is a sentimental attempt, but the story is highly random and forgettable. If you want to experience a sobbing tale, you can see this film.
