Emmerich has attempted to portray the revolutionary 1969 riots that took place in New York Click to look into! >> Read More... which lit the fire for demanding equal rights for the whole LGBTQ society, in this coming-of-age drama.

The movie starts with the fictional character, Danny Winters, who gets thrown out of his house in Indiana when he comes out to his parents about being gay. He comes to New York and finds himself welcomed with open arms by a group of street kids among who are many other gay, lesbian and transgender people of color. Through them, he comes to know about the only gay bar in New York, the Stonewall Inn, which is run by the sleazy Mafia, Ed Murphy, who is one of the many LGBTQ hating people waiting and striking against them at every opportunity he could get. He often collaborated with like-minded police forces to harass and abuse them, till they all joined forces together to raise their voices and protest against them all.

This movie has undoubtedly managed to bring out the real sufferings and daily harassments that the gay community had to face in the 60s. Even though the protagonist of this movie may be played by Jeremy Irvin as the confused and adorable new gay on the block, but Jonny Beauchamp is the one who has breathed real life into the movie by portraying the fabulously effortless Puerto Rican, sporting long hair and women’s costume with panache. The way he has held up the face and represented the gay community in the movie is very highly commendable. The production design and the cinematography has beautifully brought back the 60s New York with the same feel and attitude that was needed.

This movie has faced many criticisms from the time its first trailer had been released. Many have accused how the director has managed to whit-wash the whole incident down to only straight Caucasian men representing the entire multi-colored community consisting of gay, lesbians, trans gender male, female and drag queens. Even after many justifications made by the director about how he has tried his best to represent the entire situation as precisely as he could, there are still a lot for critics to complain about. Moreover, it cannot be denied that the movie has not been able to bring to the audience the various other political implications and reasons behind the Stonewall Movement and it has also altered the incidents at the beginning of the riot a lot from what had actually happened.

To this brave attempt to tell us the story of the origins of the Gay Liberation Movements, and also show us what this formerly repressed community had to endure to be where they are today, I give Stonewall 3.5 out of 5 popcorn tubs.
