Shang-chi and the Legend of the ten rings is a 2021 superhero film based on the Marvel character ‘Shang-chi.’ It is produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures and is the 25th Marvel film. It is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and co-written by Dave Callaham and Andrew Lanham. This film features Simu Liu as the main protagonist ‘Shang-chi’ with Awkwafina, Meng’er Zhang, Fala Chen, Florian Munteanu, Benedict Wong, Yuen Wah, Michelle Yeoh Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh Choo-Kheng, is an actress an >> Read More... , Ben Kingsley Ben Kingsley born in Snainton village of England a >> Read More... , and Tony Leung in side roles. The budget was estimated at around $150-200 million. This is the first Marvel movie with an Asian director and a predominantly Asian cast.

Plot

Shang-chi’s father is the leader of the Ten Rings organization. Shang-chi, however, doesn’t like the organization and leaves his father behind. Although he is living a quiet life as a martial artist, Shang-chi is forced to confront his past and his father when the Ten Rings organization attacks him, where he discovers secrets behind the working of the organization. As he goes through the movie, he confronts his father, shocked by news he wasn’t ready for. Later, he must fight against otherworldly powers as the descendant of his father.

Star Performance

Simu Liu, who acted as Shang-chi, was regarded as the ‘best Shang-chi’ by many film critics for his fantastic performance in this film. Liu had performed many stunts on his own and did an excellent job at it. He is skilled in numerous martial arts, making him the perfect candidate for this role. Awkwafina, who is Katy in the movie, also stole hearts with her performance in this film, portraying the right amount of emotions. Further, Meng’er Zhand, who is Shang-chi’s sister, also earned fame through her role in this movie.

Analysis

This film did an amazing job at capturing the hearts of not only Marvel fans but also viewers from all around the world for its screenplay, action, and thriller. Portraying a story of coming back home, Shang-chi and the legend of ten rings did a decent job of making the viewers connect to the story. The movie had hand-to-hand combat skills, which might not always receive a positive response, but this movie pulled it off, leaving 2-3 all-time best combat action scenes. The main characters were notable for their performance in the film, leaving a lasting impression on the viewers. The movie goes through, portraying Shaun (Simu Liu) as a martial artist who is living in the United States, seemingly cutting ties with his father. However, situations call for him to return home when he is attacked by the organization he had come to hate since his childhood. One drawback of the character sketch of Shang-chi is that he didn’t seemingly have a passion driven to slay the antagonist of the movie. Moreover, he and Katy seemed to have experienced many changes due to the sudden appearance of the organization and evil powers; still both he and she seemed to be fine at the end of the film, not really being affected by the circumstances. Still, the action in the movie is commendable, and the screenplay makes it easy to navigate through the film without much hardship. Further, the music of the film sounded pleasing and appealing to the crowd, gaining positive responses for the soundtrack.

What’s There?

  • Commendable performance by the main characters
  • Commendable action scenes and combat skills
  • Good screenplay, direction and CGI

What’s Not There?

  • No clear motivation for the main character to be fighting evil
  • Missing character development

Verdict

Although there were drawbacks to the movie, it is still worth a watch. The action scenes, especially, are worth a shot at. The characters did an overall good job at their roles and the diversity in the fighting scenes is a show-stealer. Being a movie of Asian origin, it did a pretty good job at capturing the ‘Asian life’ and also the societal living. Overall, this movie is a good release from the Marvel Universe, and due to a good response from the public, the 2nd part of the movie is in production and is expected to release in the next four years.
