Plot

The story revolves around Tom Lee, a Chinese-American adolescent, who discovers a secret about his eccentric family that he is from the lineage of magicians who act as the guardians of an ancient Phoenix. After the death of Tom’s Grandmother, he was taken as an apprentice by Mr. Hu, a talking tiger, to teach him magic. They team up with a group of strange creatures, each representing a Chinese zodiac, to protect the Phoenix. From whom did the Phoenix need to be protected? Will they be able to do so? The story unveils these mysteries.

Star Performances

As this is an animated movie hence one can only judge the performance based on the voice-overs of different artists. The performances in this movie are greatly affected by its rushed screenplay which offers very little time for the artists to showcase their talent. The leading characters voiced by Yeoh and Golding did an excellent job. Bowen Yang as Sidney provided the audience with some delightful comedic sequences. The rest of the dubbing artists weren’t given justified time, though they played their part in the story with sincerity.

Analysis

Firstly, let’s talk about the story of this film. The movie centers around a teenage Chinese-American boy named Tom, who after the death of his grandmother came to know about a secret related to his family. He came to known a strange fact about his family that they know magic with the help of which they are guarding an ancient phoenix. Mr. Hu, a tiger who can change into human form, protects Tom and decides to take him as his apprentice to teach him magic. Mr. Hu and his teammates symbolize the Chinese zodiac. It isn’t very reassuring, but this story is nothing different from other stories based on similar themes. The cast of this film couldn’t have been better, but their talent alone wasn’t sufficient to balance out the mediocrity of the screenplay. When we talk about the animation part of this film, the production department did a great job. The direction of the film felt below average and had scope for improvement. The monotonous nature of the story and a predictable climax dug down the whole film. The movie feels like a failed attempt to adapt a novel that amalgamates Chinese mythology with a modern-day story.

What’s There?

  • Visually beautiful
  • Some stunning Moments
  • A children-oriented story depicting human morals and values

What’s Not There?

  • It provides nothing different from prevalent stories based on similar themes.
  • Boring and monotonous storytelling
  • Poor screenplay
  • Unjustified time duration
  • Pacing issues

Verdict

“The Tiger’s Apprentice” feels like an end product that has been given the best of the resources available, like a fantastic cast, a decent budget, an already-written story, and a great team, however, it still fails to generate the desired results. It isn’t a bad movie; it’s just that it feels like a wasted opportunity. The lack of an innovative approach and badly adapted screenplay are the leading causes of disinterest in the movie. It feels like a movie for a young audience, with pretty decent visuals and animations.
