Ragnarok is a 2013-based Norwegian thriller-packed movie directed by Mikkel Brainne Sandemos. Are HeidenStrom and Martin Sundland head the production team, while Daniel Vold Hein oversees cinematography. John Kare Raeke and Herald Rosen have devised the screenplay.

The ensemble star-studded cast includes Pal Svetre Hagen as Sigurd, aka the protagonist, Sofia Elin as Elisabeth, and Bjorn Sundquist as Leif. The side characters include notable actors like Nicolai Cleve Broch as Allan, Maria Annette Tandero Bergyld as Ragnhild, and Julian Podolski as Brage. The cast and crew were accurately chosen for their respective roles and delivered excellently.

Plot

The movie Ragnarok centers on the life of an archaeologist Sigurd Svendenson, who has been making discoveries about the Oseberg Viking Ship. He used to research this ship with his wife, who had died now and left him to raise two children on his own. Sigurd believes that this ship contains the ruins that could expose the secret of Ragnarok. His friend Allan, who also researches the extracts found on the boat, comes to him with some leads that fuel Sigurd’s determination to march up into the famous “No-Man Land” to unravel the mystery that lies within the remains of the ship. Soon, the archaeologist's life turns upside down as he realizes that the ship contains information about the impending battle of the Ragnarok which signifies the end of Norwegian lives.

Star Performances

The stellar acting was done by the protagonist, Pal Svere Hegson, portraying an archaeologist named Sigurd Svendenson. He just gets into the character of a curious and troubled archaeologist, who is always desperate to unravel the mystery of the impending battle of Ragnarok. His expressions and dialogue add to the depth of character, making it a worthy experience for the viewers.

Analysis

The movie Ragnarok, released in 2013, is way ahead of its time. It captures the life of a Norwegian archaeologist, Sigurd Svendenson who desperately wants to unravel the mystery of a Viking ship containing remains that could give information about the battle of Ragnarok. When his friend comes to him with a lead about it, Sigurd and his kids commence on an expedition to Norway's most desolate areas finally landing up to No-Man's land.

The screenwriters have beautifully unfolded the entire story in front of the viewer. The movie also focuses on the protagonist's turmoil as he copes loss of his wife, who used to work with him on this project. The battle scene depicting Vikings, which relied heavily upon the visual effects, somehow seems realistic. Through its mesmerizing imagery and top-notch CGI effects, this movie appeals to the audience. It is a perfect blend of mystery and history to give a thriller-packed Ragnarok.

What’s There?

  • Visual imagery is used accurately to enthrall the viewers.
  • Focuses on the emotional aspects, adding depth to the characters.

What’s not There?

  • Ragnarok relies on historical references at times that cannot be comprehended by all the viewers.
  • Some scenes are too elaborate.

Verdict

If you are a history enthusiast and also have a penchant for action-packed movies, then this is a perfect blend for you. Ragnarok doesn't necessarily disappoint the audience but doesn't leave them flabbergasted, either. It is just a film written and presented well to the audience. One way or the other, this movie is fun to watch and can be considered as a one-time-watch thriller.
