Plot
The film revolves around a depressed middle-aged successful dentist named Phil. The film begins with one particular day when a successful, published author named Michael Fisk enters Phil’s clinic for some last-minute dental work. Phil feels lonely and depressed, which makes him more drawn to Michael’s successful life and his view on life. One day, Phil comes across Michael and his family in a local restaurant. He observes them. His mild obsession prompts him to follow them home and stalk them. Then the first twist of the story happens, Michael hangs himself. This shocks and confuses Phil, making him question why a man who is wealthy in money and love would throw it all away. This makes him fixate on the answer to the question and the rest of the story is about that.
Star Performance
Emily Mortimer gave a brilliant performance as the widowed wife, Alicia. Greg Kinnear’s performance was pretty good.
Analysis
This film is insightful because it explores the meaning of life and death, as well as the complexities in between. It shows the audience how nothing is black and white in life. For instance, in the film, Phil is successful but still depressed. He does not really know why and longs to find the answer by analysing other successful people. And when his successful and seemingly happy patient, Michael, whom he is stalking and analysing, suddenly commits suicide, he is fixated on finding the answer. All of this gives the film depth and shows us that just because someone seems to flourish on the surface, it does not mean that there is nothing dark bubbling underneath that is concealed from sight. One flaw in the film is when Phil imitates a friend of the Greek husbands from Greece and even manages to convince Michael’s widowed wife. This is another flaw of the film as the idea was too far-fetched and ridiculous.

Verdict
Phil is mostly a good film and people struggling with feelings of existential crisis and depression should give this a watch. Especially men, since this film depicts men more. It could provide a good catharsis for unresolved emotions.
