MORE CAST & CREW
The cop and robber relationship has been explored time and again in a lot of movies and from various angles, and it continues to capture the audience’s attention. Christian Gudegast’s Den of Thieves is another one of those heists and chase movies which features intimidating cops and equally muscled and intimidating robbers.
Plot
The movie opens media res, in the middle of an armored car being stolen in L.A., conducted by an elite team of very successful and talented robbers. Things go superbly with the crew until they kill a police officer. That is how the head cop of the movie, the LA county sheriff Nick Flanagan, gets involved. The crew comes under his radar, and he swears to catch the group. As the crew hatches a plan to rob the Federal Bank, a seemingly insurmountable task, the cop and his team get ready with their unorthodox methods to catch the crew in action.
Analysis
The movie offers nothing new to the genre of thrilling heists, but it sure is an adrenaline trip. Some scenes build up to such an edge of the seat experience. But most of the movie almost feels like a déjà vu from other crime heist movies. The visceral heat and energy are quite entertaining and refreshing. Gudegast does a phenomenal job of portraying the action scenes. The film overplays the jacked up swagger of the men in charge. Too much testosterone levels the field out leaving only the stereotypical roles for women. Den of thieves almost puts on a pedestal the smoking, drinking and cursing man. The writer turned debut director almost pulls off an excellent directorial venture in his first attempt. With enough interactive background, we tend to root for the guys on the other side of the law. Butler’s acting is now reduced to his generic scrunchy inexpressive face. The rest of the cast also has the swagger down quite well.
Star Performances
