Plot

Sonny Stano, as a kid, had just signed to the Yankees, an American professional baseball team. He was out celebrating when some neighbors who get to teasing him and just wanted a fight. During this fight, one of the troublemakers accidentally dies, and Sonny gets sent to jail. After 18 years, he gets released, but he seems almost incapable of the kind of mistake that sent him away. Sonny returns to his dead mother’s apartment near Arthur Avenue. Upon reaching, he bumps into his girlfriend, Angela, whose heart he broke. He insists she should move on with her life during his sentence. Angela is now a single mother and a teacher who lives with her 10-year-old daughter and her cousin Billy. Billy is a cop. They are drawn to each other in scenes with a warm, genuine, but her protective cousin tells Sonny to leave Angela alone. He does not want Sonny to hurt her again. The family of the dead kid is unhappy to see him back. Overcoming the difficulties and ignorance, he manages to land work helping his old coach Hannis. Hannis coaches a Yankees farm team in Staten Island. He assigns Sonny to a talented but arrogant player, Manny, who insists he does not need any advice but falls apart if he does not get a hit. Finding a way to help someone gives Sonny a chance to heal. Gaining the respect of the Empire team reminds him that he still has a lot to provide. Will he be able to earn his place back? Will people forgive him?

Star Performance:

Manganiello Sonny is undoubtedly the star performer of the movie. He shows just how good he is in quiet moments. Sonny uses his physicality well, his posture and gait shifting as he develops more confidence and allows himself to feel his natural athleticism. Humility is a crucial component of Sonny’s performance. Rather than defying those who belittle him, Sonny seems determined to carry that weight around. He keeps it grounded with a performance of sincerity and heart. The 38-year-old Sonny shows everyone that 18 years in prison didn’t diminish his swing much.

Analysis:

It's a subtle, heartfelt drama. The story has its share of sympathetic and heartwarming moments, with dashes of comedy and hilarity mixed in. The connection between Sonny and Angela is heartwarming. The film benefits from their genuine chemistry and trust in one another as they play the one-shot couple, trying to figure out if they can start over.  And there's enough in the story to make you believe in second chances.

 Verdict:

It’s a good watch movie for baseball fans. And most incredibly, a beautiful story of redemption and forgiveness. It shows how just one simple mistake can affect your whole life but that there is always hope for redemption.
