Louis J. Pinto, popularly known as Gumby is a drummer and musician. Gumby is known as one of the best drummers in Pakistan and became introduced to music at a very young age. Interestingly, he doesn’t come from any musical background and was exposed to music from his church choir and community center. He was born in a land suffering from a severe musical crisis. Since then, his skills have been showcased on many successful albums and he established himself as everyone’s favourite drummer. Gumby came a long way over the years, ranging from thunderous drum solos to subtle minimalist percussions. He has such clarity in his sound, each cymbal, snare and tom that he plays has a distinct and audible tone. Listening to and watching him is such a spiritual experience. His live act is like a revelation, a musical intoxication where an overdose is near-fatal.
There’s no logical reason as to how he got into music. He says, “It was a calling. An attraction to certain things. The sound of drums, the size, the raw elements.” He considers himself fortunate to be from a Christian community, for everything around him was music. Gumby never restricted himself to any specific genre or style of music. In 1982, his cousin Vicky gifted him a pair of drumsticks and a tape of The Police, which catapulted Gumby’s musical interest in Rock n’ Roll. The year 1989 holds great significance for him. It is when he met guitarist Amir Zaki, who introduced him to modern jazz artists such as John Coltrane and the Dave Brubeck Quartet. Amir Zaki completely changed everything for Gumby, and introduced him to the professional side of music. He exposed Gumby to the right kind of music at a young age at the right time. If he hadn’t met Amir, he would’ve never met Mekaal Hassan or Faraz Anwar.
Mekaal Hassan introduced many jazz rock stars to Gumby, and The Sheraton Lobby Band taught him essential drumming laws of volume control. He did a lot of recordings for a living, and lots of them he did for free, because he liked the music or the concept. Gumby was a drummer of the Pakistani rock band Noori, formed in the year 1996. He was the member of the band from 2003 to 2006, and again from 2011 to 2012. Gumby has also been the main drummer of all four seasons of Coke Studio in Pakistan. He admitted that he is not very good at writing and composing music, so his solo albums could very well be an instrumental album. He wants to try new instruments like keyboard and brass instruments. Gumby can play 500 beats per minute. He knows how to make money and earn his respect as a musician.
