Jeelani Bano is a famous Urdu writer. She is well-known for her writing of novels and short stories. She was born on 14th  July 1936 in Budaun, Uttar Pradesh, India. In 2001, the Indian government awarded her the Padma Shri, the fourth-highest civilian award in India. Other awards include Andhra Pradesh Sahitya Akademi Award (1960), Soviet Land Nehru Award(1985), Qaumi Haali Award (1989), and National Literary Award (NTR). Following her education, she enrolled in an intermediate course after marrying renowned poet Anwar Moazzam, who had previously headed the Osmania University Department of Islamic Studies and moving to Hyderabad.

Her pursuit of an education led her to earn an MA in Urdu. She is said to have begun writing when she was eight years old. Her debut story, Ek Nazar Idhar Bhi (A Glance Hither), was released in 1952. She is recognized for writing 22 books, which include novels beginning with Aiwaan-e-ghazal and anthologies beginning with Roshni ke Minar. Among her published works are an autobiography, Afzane, and Door ki Aawaazen, a compilation of her letters to various authors. She had been the chairperson in non governmental organization for women’s rights, Asmita. She also has been associated with Child and Women Human Rights, a forum of the International Human Rights Association of India, as its principal advisor. Her father, the renowned poet Hairat Badayuni, gave her the gift of writing. She grew up in a solely literary environment.
