Akhlaq Mohammad Khan, better known by his takhallus Shahryar, was an Indian academician and a notable Urdu poet in India. He was born on 16 June 1936 in Aonla, United Provinces, British India. He was an Educator, Poet, and a Lyricist. His father was Abu Mohammad Khan, who was a Police Officer. His family was from the village Chaundhera in Bulandshahr District, Uttar Pradesh. He wanted to be an athlete since childhood, but his father wanted him to join the police force. He ran away from home and was under the guidance ofKhaleel-Ur-Rehman Azmi, the renowned Urdu critic and poet. He then graduated from Aligarh Muslim University and passed his BA in psychology in 1958.

He also went to do MA in psychology but left it after a year and later got admittedto the Urdu section of AMU. In 1961 he passed his MA in Urdu and he also finished his Ph.D. in Aligarh. He started writing for HamariZubaan, the weekly magazine of the AnjumanTarraqqi-e-Urdu,and worked there, for five years. After this, he joined Aligarh Muslim University as a lecturer in Urdu. He retired as the chairman of the Urdu department. He also co-edited the literary magazine Sher-o-Hikmat. His first-ever poetry collection was Ism-e-azam which got published in 1965. His second collection was Satvandar (Satva yet in English and his third collection was HijrKe Mausam. One of his most celebrated works is KhwabKedar band hain for which he also won the Sahitya Akademi Award in Urduthat year.

He has published five poetry collections in Urdu script. He was the fourth Urdu writer to win the Jnanpith Award. Ali used two of Shahryar’s ghazals, AjeebSanehaMujhparGuzar Gaya Yaaron, and Seene Mein Jalan Ankhon Mein Toofan Sa Kyun Hai in his debut, and they are still considered classics. UmraoJaan, 'Ye Ka Jagah Hai Doston','Dil Cheez Kya Hai Aap Meri JaanLijiye',and 'In Aankhon Ki MastiKe', etc. are some of his finest lyrics.

He also wrote for Yash Chopra's Faasle and Anjumanfor Muzaffar Ali. He tied the knot with Najma Mahmood, an instructor in the English department at the Women’s College at Aligarh. They had three offspring Humayun Shahryar, Saima Shahryar, and Faridoon Shahryar. He has won several awards.
