Jameel Mazhari, was a renowned poet and writer of Indian origin, who gained worldwide recognition under his pen name – Jameel. He was born on September 2, 1904, in Patna, Bihar. His real name was Meer Kazim Ali, and he hailed from a family of poets, with his elder relative Syed Mazhar Hassan being a notable poet as well. Proud of his lineage, Syed Kazim Ali appended the word Mazhari to his pen name and thus became known as Jameel Mazhari. Jameel received his early education in Motihari and Muzaffarpur before moving to Calcutta for higher studies. There, he learned from notable scholars and poets like Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, Hussain Khayal, Aghaz Hashr, Naseer, and Allama Raza Ali Wahshat, who recognized his talent for poetry. Jameel started reciting poetry while studying and sought corrections from Wahshat, who soon realized that there was no need for him to reform.
After graduating with an M.A. from Calcutta University in 1931, Jameel Mazhari pursued a career in journalism, during which he wrote extensively on politics, and several scholarly articles, essays, novels, and fiction. His work Farz Ki Qurbaan-Gaah Par became particularly popular. He spent six years as a journalist before moving into politics in 1937 as a publicity officer for the Congress-led administration in Bihar. However, he resigned from the position when the Congress government fell in 1942. Jameel Mazhari eventually withdrew from practical politics and accepted a post as an Urdu teacher at Patna University. In the year 1964, he left the teaching job and devoted himself entirely to the promotion and of Urdu poetry and literature. Jameel Mazhari paid attention to prose writing, but his real work was in poetry.
He studied ancient poetic traditions carefully and was influenced by classical traditions, which can be seen in the confluence of ancient and modern subject matter and style in his poetry. Jameel Mazhari's contribution to Urdu literature is significant and recognized worldwide. His collection of ghazals - Fikr-e-Jameel, and collection of Nazms, Naqsh-e-Jameel, are popular among lovers of Urdu poetry. His poetry continues to inspire and influence poets and writers in the Urdu language, making him a legend in the field of Urdu literature.
