Roohi Bano was the daughter of Alla Rakha, a noted player of India and half-sister of Indian music virtuoso Ustad Zakir Hussain. She joined television while doing her master’s degree in psychology from the Government College, Lahore. She had memorable roles in several well-known TV series, including Zard Gulab, Darwaza, and Kiran Kahani (1973). In 1981, the President of Pakistan presented her with the Pride of Performance award.

She was honoured with awards such as Best Actress at PTV Award (1974, 1983), and Film Graduate Awards (1978, 1981, 1983). She also received Unilever Chairman's Lifetime Achievement Award at the 9th Lux Style Awards (2010), Lifetime Achievement Award at 1st Hum Awards (2011), and a special award at Nigar Award in 1976. Later in her life, she was diagnosed with schizophrenia. She spent some years at the rehabilitation center Fountain House in Lahore. On January 25, 2019, she died in Istanbul. On 3rd February, the Pakistan National Council of the Arts paid tribute to her. On 16th August, the Government of Pakistan named a street after her name in Lahore.

Roohi Bano was born on 10 August 1951 in Karachi, Pakistan. She was a famous Pakistani actress known for her roles in Kiran Kahani, Zard Gulab, Darwaza, etc. She was commonly known as The Queen of Melancholy. She is the daughter of Alla Rakha. Her father is a noted Indian personality and a well-known and famous tabla player of India. Ustad Zakir Hussain is her half-brother. Most of her roles were mournful. She only played pessimist characters in the dramas and films. She completed her education at Government College University, Lahore. She has a Masters in Psychology. She joined television during her master's.

She was a successful star. Roohi has ruled the Pakistani Industry for a long time. She hailed from a musical family. She has worked with many great actors and directors. She helped in establishing the Pakistani TV industry. Apart from acting, she took a great interest in literature. But her real life was not as glamorous as her reel life. Roohi has faced several hardships throughout her journey. She impressed the audience with her phenomenal act in Kiran Kahani (1973). This role made her a household name. She also acted in Qila Kahani, Zard Gulab, Hairatkada, Darwaza and Kala Daira. Roohi was also known for Kiran Aur Kali (1981), Rastey Ka Patther (1976) and Palki(1975). She got her first opportunity after appearing on a quiz show where veteran actor Farooq Zamir saw the spark in her and offered her a role. In 1970, she acted in a few films alongside popular heroes of that time like Waheed Murad, Mohammad Ali, Nadeem, etc. Some of her films performed well, but Roohi Bano could not make it as a film heroine. Her reel and real life were not much different from each other. She went through two failed marriages as well as some mental issues.

She also had a son but lost him in some tragedy. During her reign, she won many prestigious awards like Nigar Award, Film Graduate Awards, etc. In 1981, she won two famous awards one of it is Pride of Performance. This award is given by the President of Pakistan. The next award was the Film Graduate Award for Best Actress. She won this award three times. Her first was PTV Award, 1974 in the category of best actress. In 2010, she was awarded with Unilever Chairman's Lifetime Achievement Award in 9th Lux Style Awards. She again won the Lifetime Achievement in 1st Hum Awards, 2011. Nigar Awards was the most notable award worn by her. Bano breathed her last in Istanbul where she was under treatment for various health issues. She died on 25th January 2019.
