Govind Purushottam Deshpande was a Marathi academic and playwright for Maharashtra, India. He was born in 1938 in Nashik, Maharashtra, India. He completed his schooling in Rahimatpur. He completed his Masters in Ancient Indian History from the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda. He enrolled for a Ph. D. at the School of International Affairs, New Delhi. He completed his Ph. D. and later taught at the Centre for East Asian Studies at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Kalindi, a women’s rights activist, is his wife. Ashwini, his daughter, is an economist at the Delhi School of Economics. Sudhanva, his son, is a publisher with LeftWord Books and a theatre activist with Jan Natya Manch, New Delhi.

Jyoti Subhash, a Marathi stage and film actor, was his sister. Some of his plays are Udhwastha Dharmashala, Andhar Yatra, Satyashodhak, Antim Divas, Chanakya Vishnugupta, Music System, and Raastey. He lived in Pune after his retirement. He was hospitalized when he suffered a brain hemorrhage in July 2013. He took his last breath at home on 16 October 2013.
