He belongs to the seventh generation of Dharwad, Gwalior, musicians and learned most of his craft from his father, Ustad Abdul Karim Khan, as well as from his esteemed grandfather, Sitar Ratna Rahimat Khan. Ratna Rahimat Khan, a pupil of the eminent master Ustad Bande Ali Khan, not only transformed the three-string sitar into the seven-string instrument we have today, but also brought the instrumental khyal of the Gwalior Gharana and the instrumental dhrupad of Gwalior back together. Because of this unrivaled heritage, his work has a certain tint that is rare in modern music circles. He came second in the 1978 All India Radio Music Competition in Dharwad at the age of 19.
He won both the preliminary and final rounds of the Yuva Sangeet Nrithya Mahotsav on October 6, 1987, which was held at the South-Central Zone Cultural Center in Nagpur. He usually performs on the Goa stations AIR Dharwad and AIR Panaji. In 1992 and 1994, he contributed music to the Konkani Telefilms Tulsi and Vadhachakra, the first Marathi movie made in Goa. He also played live music for one of Kalidas plays, Abhidnyan Shakuntal, which was presented by Prof. Kamalakar Sonatakke on December 16 and 17. At the Kala Academy in Goa for several years, Ustad Chhote Rahimat Khan has been head of the sitar faculty. He has also given public performances at numerous gatherings in Asia and Europe.
