Ashok Hande or Ashok Kisanrao Hande is an Indian director. He has worked predominantly in the Marathi language. He was born in Umbraj village in Pune. He is also a stage director, writer, actor, singer and producer. Ashok Hande developed interest in music and plays while he was in school. He participated in multiple school programs and learned folk music gradually, too. In his college, he joined the NSS (National Social Service). He made a musical group on August 7, 1987, and named it ‘Chaurang.’
Through his group, he promoted the rich Indian culture and tradition. Chaurang became a popular musical and dance group. It crossed over 6000 shows and even went ahead to perform in foreign countries including the UK, US, Netherlands, UAE, Belgium and Canada. Ashok also introduced Marathi Baana in 2005. The show featured farmers’ lives and tribal stories. It showed festivals, folk music, devotional bhakti songs and games played by women.
Ashok has also worked in many Marathi serials as a playback singer. ‘Hamaal De Dhamal,’ ‘Janta Janardan,’ ‘Jeevasakha,’ and ‘Rangberangi’ are a few of the serials. He composed the shows ‘Mangal Gaani,’ ‘Dangal Gaani,’ ‘Aawaz Ki Duniya,’ ‘Gaane Suhane’ and ‘Aazadi 50.’ He won the ‘Vasant Desai Puraskar’ and ‘Lokmat Maharashtrian of the Year 2017’ in the performing arts section.Â
