Dhanpat Rai Srivastava, who is known by his pen name Munshi Premchand, was born in Banaras on 31 July 1880 to a post office clerk. His love for fiction started from a young age. He was married at the age of 15 to his first wife and his second wife in 1906. He first wrote under the pseudonym Nawab Rai. His first short novel was Asrar-e Ma’abid. He died in Banaras on 8 October 1936 at the age of 56. His son Amrit Rai was also a famous writer. He was an Indian writer who spearheaded the movement of Hindi and Urdu social fiction. He was famous for modern Hindustani literature. He is regarded as one of the finest Indian writers and was one of the first authors to write about social issues.
His famous works include Godaan, Bazaar-e-Husn, Karmabhoomi, and Idgah. He has written over 300 short stories and fourteen novels. He was significantly influenced by the independence movement, and many of his early stories were patriotic. He also wrote scripts for the film Mazdoor, directed by Mohan Bhawnani. He was the first President of the Progressive Writers’ Association in Lucknow. He was the first Indian Author to prominently write about realism.
