Leela Roy Ghosh

Leela Roy Ghosh was an Indian actress and voice-dubbing artist. She was also a dubbing director. She dubbed movies in Hindi, Bengali, English, Marathi and Urdu. She was born on 3 February 1948. Ghosh was the granddaughter of Karambir Gouri Sankar Roy, one of the most famous journalists.

Leela Ghosh was perhaps best known for being the founder and president of the dubbing studio, Sound and Vision India. It is one of the leading studios in the country, located in Andheri, Mumbai, India. Her daughter played a fantastic role in helping her mother, and they did business together for the company from the early 1990s until Leena’s death. The company used to handle Indian voice-dubs in mostly Hindi and other regional languages, for movies filmed by Hollywood production houses such as Paramount Pictures, Universal Studios, and Sony Pictures Entertainment.

The company has dubbed over 300 foreign films and over a thousand TV programs. In 1993, she dubbed the Hollywood blockbuster- Jurassic Park, which proved to be the turning point of her career. The movie was dubbed into three languages, Hindi, Telugu, and Tamil. After Jurassic Park, she got assignments in ad jingles. Apart from dubbing works, Ghosh also directed a few documentary films. Spiderman, Jumanji, and Anaconda are her most popular dubbed movies.

Almost seventy percent of Hollywood movies, that were dubbed in Indian languages, were dubbed in Sound and Vision India. Leela learned social anthropology and even worked in the Union Ministry of Tourism London before she entered the dubbing field. She passed away on 11 May 2012 from complications of liver transplant surgery at the age of 64. After her mother’s death, her daughter Mona Ghosh Shetty undertook the dubbing works of Sound and Vision India.
