Uma Basu is an actress who works in the Hindi TV industry and has also appeared in the Bengali film industry. She was born and brought up in Kolkata, where she did most of her work in the early part of her life. She has appeared in many Bengali movies and TV serials. She was married to Swaraj Basu, a well-known radio personality in Kolkata, who passed away in 2005. She started her acting career as a theatre artist.
Her on-screen debut came in 2004 in the movie Sudhu Tumi. She then appeared in Tolly Lights in 2008, and now she can be seen in the popular Hindi TV serial Vidya. It is a show that is broadcasted on Colors TV, and it is about the life of a woman who works in the government sector. Uma plays the mother-in-law of the lead character Vidya called Parbatiya Devi.
The character that she portrays is of a vamp, and she said in an interview that she is very choosy as an actor to select acting roles, but this got her interest and she could fulfill her creative satisfaction. Apart from her on-going TV stint, Uma last made an appearance on the silver screen with Bengali movie Panchalit which was released in 2017.
