Debajit Changmai

Debajit Changmai is an Indian audio engineer who has literally given voice to over 150 Bollywood movies in a career spanning nearly two decades. He was born and raised in Sivasagar, Assam, where he attended the Sivasagar Government H.S. & M.P. School. He graduated from the Jorhat Institute of Science & Technology before pursuing his masters from the Jyoti Chitraban Film and Television Institute in Guwahati. He joined the FMx studio in 2002, where he currently works as the senior re-recording mixer. His first project was as an assistant sound mixer in Tighmanshu Dhulia’s “Haasil” (2003), starring Jimmy Shergill and Irrfan Khan. Since then the audio engineer has come a long way, having mixed dialogues, songs and background scores for numerous blockbusters, including “Gangaajal” (2003), “Swades” (2004), “Rang De Basanti” (2006), “Jodha Akbar” (2008), “Don 2” (2011), “Dangal” (2016), and “Gully Boy” (2019). He was felicitated with the National Film Award for Best Audiography in 2011 for his work in “Ishqiya.” He was the recipient of the International Indian Film Award for Best Sound Mixing for three consecutive years for “Bhaag Milkha Bhaag” (2013), “Chennai Express” (2014), and “Haider” (2015). In 2015, he bagged the Star Guild Award for Best Sound Mixing for “Kick.” Debajit has left his mark in Hollywood as well, where he mixed the sounds for Mira Nair’s “The Reluctant Fundamentalist” (2013). In 2018, he became one of the twenty Indian personalities to be honored with an invitation as a voting member by the prestigious Academy of Motion Pictures, Arts and Sciences. He along with Bishwadeep Chatterjee (sound mixer of “3 Idiots” (2009)) made it Assam’s second representation at the Oscars after Amrit Pritam Dutta (known for “Ra.One” (2011) & “Ghajini” (2008)) in 2017. He is presently working on his next project, Anurag Kashyap’s “Ghoomketu,” which is in its post-production stages and will star Nawazuddin Siddiqui in a comic role. Debajit resides in Mumbai with his wife, Bornali, and son, Rolly.
