Sunil Babu Pant

Sunil Babu Pant, a computer engineer, is the first ever openly gay politician in Nepal. He is the founder and director of Blue Diamond Society, Nepal's first LGBTI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex) rights organisation. Pant founded this organisation in 2001 and just 11 years, this society achieved brilliant success advocating for LGBTI people rights. Due to the bravery of staff and founder of Blue Diamond Society, Nepal celebrates diversity in the country. Pant’s election is a memorable event for the country. In 2007, the foundation took a case in front of supreme court to identify LGBTI people to be equal and identification of gender should be on self - identification bases only. Supreme Court responded positively to it and now the foundation is working in the direction to implement policies. In Nepal, he has been working with the government to improve this identity-based access to documentation and civic participation. On all official forms and registers, the Nepal government is working to implement third option “Others” on all official forms and registers.

Thus, all LGBTI now can get their citizenship certificates, passports, voter ID cards, etc. by defining themselves as the third gender, instead as “ Male” or “ Female”.The first public lesbian wedding was held by Sunil Babu Pant in Nepal, which inspired gay communities in West Bengal and Kerala to seek help to host the two states first public gay rallies next month. Due to his kind doings, he was also nominated for noble piece prize on Mar 07, 2014. Sunil Babu Pant was one of five members of the constituent assembly of CPN(U), In the November 2006 meeting of “ The Yogyakarta Principles”, there were 29 experts, in which Pant was one of them. He is also head of LGBT-positive travel agency named Pink Mountains, that works on to provide honeymoon packages to LGBTI people from abroad.
