Nitin Baid

Nitin Baid is a Bollywood film editor who made his debut as a feature film editor with Masaan (2015), which was directed by Neeraj Ghaywan. The film was screened at Cannes Film Festival and won even FIPRESCI prize. Nitin was born in Kolkata but had education at College in Bangalore. He studied in Christ College, Bangalore and then did his course in Film Editing at Whistling Woods at Mumbai. After completion, he was look out for exact work and looked for his demand in the film industry. He worked as assistant editor for the movie Gangs of Wasseypur. Later, he worked as an associate editor for the movie Hasee Toh Phasee. Nitin first met Neeraj on the sets of Gangs of Wasseypur and they both decided to make a short film ‘Shor’ together. After the short film got over, Neeraj spoke about working with a feature film too which got materialized after Wasseypur at the end of its shooting schedule. Neeraj, Varun Grover, and Nitin Baid worked together to give a final touch to the draft of the movie ‘Masaan’ and traveled long distances in Varanasi to make a final draft to the project script as it had no subplots. Finally, after having several rounds of discussion, a neat draft of the movie was prepared. Nitin even traveled to many locales while shooting was in progress for the movie. Nitin showed the film to Anurag Kashyap and when Anurag liked it, it was a sigh of relief for the film editor. Anurag Kashyap had also given certain tips to the film editor and director which worked well at the finishing stages of the film editing. Anurag’s suggestions have helped a lot. Moreover, Nitin worked as a close unit, was always open to suggestions and it shows on screen. After a point, he became obsessed with Masaan. Above all, the editing part of the movie ‘Masaan’ was really challenging for the editor. He was very much confused with the idea of editing the begging scene of the movie. It was indeed a long but an eventful journey for the editor to get chance with films like Gangs of Wasseypur and even Hasee Toh Phasee. This editor was part of many confusions in life, while he wanted to get into films, he applied to both SRFTi and FTII. But he had taken the right decision in joining Whistling Woods. While he was studying in Bangalore, he had a habit of collecting DVDs and collection of DVDs was his inspiration to join films. In the year 2015, he has done a job of co-editor for the movie 'Waiting' which was handled by Apurva Asrani. The film was directed by Anu Menon. The film received positive reviews in many international film festival and even won for Menon the best director award at London Asian Film Festival. In the year 2016, the film editor was involved with another film ‘Trapped’ which was completely shot within a month and was directed by Vikramaditya Motwane. ‘ Trapped’ even bagged 'Best Asian Film' Award at Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival in 2017. After working in art movies, Nitin moved to Yash Chopra’s banner film ‘Ittefaq' which was directed by Abhay Chopra and the script was retained from the old script written by Yash Chopra in 1969 which starred Rajesh Khanna. Nitin likes very much the scripts of the films that he worked so far. All his films was an out of the ordinary subject, wholesome film. He is thankful to the entire cast and crew who waited patiently for the release of his (any) movies despite the delay in his part of editing. He feels everyone in the industry had faith upon him and belief in his work. Patience pays a lot in life, Nitin is an example to watch for. His life that began with the collection of DVDs at the Bangalore market, made him win the journey at last!
